Vienna is full of Instagrammable opportunities. From stunning architecture to beautiful gardens and breathtaking views, the Austrian capital has it all. Just take a look at my Instagram feed and you’ll know what I’m talking about – I can’t stop taking photos of this city. If you’re planning a trip here and you’re looking to up your social media game, I’ve rounded up 20 of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna, so let’s just dive in.
THE MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE PLACES IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

St. Charles Church
First on the list is one of my all time favourite photo places in Vienna: St. Charles Church /Karlskirche/. It is located in the very centre of the city – Karlsplatz metro station, right next to the University of Technology. From my observations, this place doesn’t get too crowded, so you don’t have to be up early to get a nice shot without anyone else in the background. This photo, for example, was taken in the afternoon, so spare your mornings for some of the other photo-worthy places mentioned below!

2. St. Francis of Assisi Church
This is one of the prettiest places in Vienna and yet, for some reason, it is quite overlooked. The St. Francis of Assisi Church looks like a Disney castle and it makes for the perfect Instagram shot! Its lack of popularity means that, once again, you don’t have to worry about getting there early before ‘everyone else’.

Prater
Prater is a large amusement park and is one of the most touristy places in the city. Here you can find various rides and rollercoasters, as well as the famous Viennese giant wheel, which has turned into one of Vienna’s landmarks. The Prater area is open 24 hours, however, the different attractions may have different opening hours (from 10am till 1am, depending on the weather). You don’t really need working attractions in order to take a nice shot though, do you!?

University of Vienna
The University of Vienna is one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking world, dating back to 1365. The building is old but has been extremely well preserved throughout the years, which makes the interior perfect for some beautiful photos. Check out the inner yard as well – it gives you a whole new perspective to work with.

University of Vienna Library
If you decide to visit the university, don’t forget to go check out the library. All I am going to say about this place is that you’re not going to want to leave – it makes you feel like you’re in a Harry Potter book! Going inside with bags and jackets is not permitted, so either leave them by the door, or ask the staff if you can just take a peek and a few shots – they’ll let you in.

Hundertwasserhaus
Hundertwasserhaus is definitely one of the most picturesque and Instagrammable places in Vienna, as well as one of the most visited ones. The building serves as an apartment house and impresses with its colourful and playful facade. Due to its unique style it is now considered an Austrian cultural heritage. There is a cute ‘London’ phone booth right next to it, so why not use it as a prop for your photo – it adds that extra charm for sure!

Belvedere Palace
These historic Baroque palaces are a must-see when visiting Vienna. The whole Belvedere complex consists of the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palace, the Orangery and the Palace Stables, as well as the beautiful gardens around it. The inside of it is used as an art museum nowadays, but it’s enough to enjoy the beauty of the place just from the outside.

Schönbrunn Palace
Welcome to Schönbrunn Palace – one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments of Austria. This place is well worth a visit – it is massive and it has so much to offer: the gorgeous palace itself, the beautiful gardens, the world’s oldest zoo, a park, and the gloriette, which is located on a big hill, offering a breathtaking view over the city. Be there bright and early to skip the crowds and plan at least an hour or two to walk around and take in all the beauty.

Austrian National Library
Walking around the National Library makes you feel like you’re in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast movie. This is the largest library in Austria, and definitely one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen.

St Stephen’s Cathedral
St Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the most impressive buildings in Vienna, built in the 12th century in a beautiful gothic style. It is the most visited place, so beware that the square in front is always crowded, unless you get there very early. The two towers of the cathedral reveal a gorgeous view over the city. You can either climb the 343 steps that lead to the South Tower for €5.00 or take the elevator to the top of the North Tower for €6.00. Whichever one you choose, you won’t be disappointed!

Graben Street
Right next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral is Graben street – a beautiful pedestrian shopping street with many pretty cafes along the sidewalks. Indeed, the whole city of Vienna is incredibly picturesque, but somehow this exact street seems super Instagrammable to me.

Hofburg
The Hofburg Palace is the current residency and workplace of the Austrian president, and it holds many important events like annual balls, ceremonies and congresses. It is located in close proximity to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Graben Street, so walking there wouldn’t be a problem. The building is stunning to say the least – a perfect addition to your Instagram feed.

Michaelerplatz
Michaelerplatz (St. Michael’s Square) is the entrance gate to the Hofburg palace. The style of it is pretty similar to Hofburg itself, but all the horses and the carriages in front of it create quite a unique atmosphere.

Burggarten
Right behind the Hofburg palace is Burggarten. The place is home to the Palm House – one of the most neglected instagrammable spots in Vienna, if you ask me. There is a huge park where you can chill and soak up some sun rays in the summer, or enjoy a warm Viennese coffee in the cafe there during the winter. But don’t forget to snap a photo of the beautiful glasshouses for the ‘gram.

University of Economics
The building of the University of Economics is newly constructed and it is considered the largest campus for business sciences in Europe. The design inside reminds me of a spaceship (not that I’ve ever been on one haha), and it’s honestly quite impressive. The interior is white and sleek, so if that’s what your Instagram feed needs – go for it!

Vienna State Opera
The famous Viennese opera house is one of the must-see places for everyone visiting the Austrian capital. Its style and architecture make everyone stop and take a second look, no matter how many times they’ve seen it already. The interior is just as beautiful as the exterior, if not even more so. Pro tip: To get the best view of the building and take a shot from the same spot that many Instagrammers do, go up the stairs in front of Albertina Museum (right next to it).

Votive Church
Votive Church is another beautiful gothic church in the first district, located right next to the main building of the University of Vienna. Sadly, the front of the church is always covered with advertisements, but you can get a beautiful shot of the side facades from the small streets around it.

Maria-Theresien Platz
The Square of Maria Theresa is another very popular spot in Vienna that every single guide leads you to. Facing each other from both sides of the square are two almost-identical museums – the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Art History. Right in the middle of the square stands a statue of Empress Maria Theresa, surrounded by beautiful green areas with a few benches where you can take a short rest and enjoy the view. The facade of the ‘twin’ museums can’t get any more photogenic, so strike a pose and take that perfect Instagram shot.

Vienna City Hall (Rathaus)
The city hall in Vienna is another one of the must-see places there. There is usually always something taking place in front of it – a Christmas market in the winter, a film festival during the summer months, or an ice rink right after Christmas. Whichever event you stumble across, you won’t be disappointed, because it’s just going to add to the charm of this place.

20. Maria am Gestade
This gothic jewel is one of the oldest churches in the city, and one of the most photogenic places in all of Vienna. The staircase in front is perfect for some sneaky shots, especially since not many know about this exact spot. The church is so well tucked away from the tourist eyes, that it can even be hard to find.

21. Schlachthausgasse, or the “Cherry Blossom Street”
Let’s end with one of my personal favourites – the “Cherry Blossom Street”. During spring this street turns into a pink heaven of gorgeous flower petals everywhere around. I spent so long googling and looking for this exact place after seeing a photo of it on Instagram, and the satisfaction when I found it was surreal. Don’t miss it if you’re visiting anywhere between the end of March and beginning of May!
