You may be wondering why is Viennese Schnitzel so special? Isn’t it the same as normal schnitzel?
You’re in for a treat on this one!
The real Viennese schnitzel is made only from veal and this is protected as such under Austrian law. However, you will see that many restaurants use the terms schnitzel and wiener schnitzel interchangeably.
Most of them would add to the description whether it’s from chicken, pork or veal. In case it is not stated anywhere, you can always ask the waiter about the type of meat they are using.
Another typical characteristics is the fact that Wiener Schnitzel is served with cold potato salad. If provided, ask for some lingonberries on the side – this is how you’ll get to experience the real deal! Trust me, it all goes so well together.

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST SCHNITZEL IN VIENNA?

Figlmüller
Definitely one of THE best and most authentic places for Viennese schnitzel is Figlmüller. This restaurant has kept their schnitzel recipe for over 100 years, since they first opened their doors in 1905. Even their slogan is “The home of the schnitzel”.
The portions are huge, so bear in mind that one schnitzel might be enough for two people.
The place is usually packed so be sure to book a table in advance.

Plachuttas Gasthaus zur Oper
Plachutta is another very old traditional restaurant, located right next to the Opera house. It is amongst the locals’ favourite places for schnitzel.
The portions are still quite big, but not as big as in Figlmüller.
A lovely garden attracts visitors in the warmer months – there is nothing better than enjoying some delicious food while soaking up the sun rays.
While the schnitzel is great, I can’t really justify the high prices of this place.
A schnitzel would cost you about 20 EUR, and a potato salad needs to be ordered separately (which in other restaurants comes as a side to the schnitzel), so you would pay about 25 EUR just for your meal.
In my personal opinion – Plachutta offers a great ambiance and delicious food, but it’s not exactly the right match if you’re on a budget.

Schnitzelwirt
Schnitzelwirt is also one of the most popular restaurants for Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna. However, here you will find not only the typical Viennese schnitzel, but also a wide variety of all sorts of schnitzels – Parisian Schnitzel, Schnitzel a la Mexico, Wachau Schnitzel and much more.
If you’re someone who loves to experiment and try new things, this place is perfect.
The restaurant only takes reservations for groups of 4 or more, so if you’re 2 or 3 people going there, be prepared for a short waiting time to be seated.
According to the reviews though, it is totally worth it.

Augustinerkeller
Located in the cellar of Albertina museum, Augustinerkeller is another very traditional restaurant which offers Viennese cuisine.
I have heard very mixed reviews about this place. Some people are extremely impressed with the service and food, while others didn’t find it to be good value for their money. One thing that can’t be denied, though, is that everybody liked the medieval atmosphere and cosy ambience.
Many locals like to meet there as well, so keep this in mind while deciding on where to try the best schnitzel in Vienna.

Reinthaler
Reinthaler is a very traditional local restaurant, located in the heart of the city centre. It’s a very small and cosy place, which is usually packed.
However, it’s not a very touristic place – it’s more locals that you’d find here. This can also be noticed by the prices – they are definitely much more acceptable than most other traditional restaurants in the area.

Pöschl
Pöschl ist a very typical and simple Austrian guest house with delicious Viennese cuisine. Even though it’s located in the city centre, and it can get quite full, it is still very likely to be seated without having to wait too long. However, if you’re a group, it’s always recommended to book in advance.
The portions are of a very decent size and the food is very delicious.
If you’re looking for a not very pretentious place, but still want to enjoy Viennese cuisine in authentic atmosphere, then this is the one for you.

Fassldippler
Another great local restaurant that should be put on the ‘best schnitzel in Vienna’ list is definitely the Fassldippler.
The place offers delicious Viennese dishes. However, one of the biggest reasons people like coming here is because of the great variety of local craft beers.
If you want to enjoy a Wiener Schnitzel with a good glass of beer, then Fassldippler is the place to go.

Brandauer Gerngross
If you’re looking to escape the tourist crowds and enjoy a nice view over Vienna while having delicious Viennese meals, you’re at the right place.
My personal favourite has to be the Brandauer Gerngross.
The restaurant is located on the last floor of a shopping mall, which might seem a bit strange and not so cosy at first, but trust me on this one.
If you’re visiting in the warmer months, definitely try to get a table on the terrace – you’ll be rewarded with a pretty view.
Not to mention that here you will find one of the cheapest schnitzels possible, and very very delicious as well!
I took my family to this place when they came to visit me in Vienna, and everybody absolutely loved their food.

Huth Die Gastwirtschaft
One of the most delicious Viennese schnitzels is to be tried at Huth die Gastwirtschaft.
The restaurant is located in the city centre and it’s always extremely busy, which speaks for itself. The dishes are cooked with pure excellence and served beautifully decorated.
It is not the cheapest place, but also definitely not one to disappoint.
Getting a table without reservation is close to impossible, so make sure to book in advance!
